Canon R3 Saved Me $6,000

Red Rock Canyon – Canon EOS R5 w/15-35mm f2.8

It’s hard to believe, but the new soon-to-be-released Canon EOS R3 just saved me six thousand bucks! That’s right; my credit card breathed a sigh of relief over that.

My current workhorse is the Canon R5, which is coming up on its first birthday. I’ve been lusting for the R3, but the resolution appears to have a 30.1-megapixel full-frame sensor. I was hoping that it would be in the 60-80 mp range, but apparently not.

The current top-of-the-line Canon is the 1DX with a 20 mp full-frame sensor. While that used to be great, it is slipping into obscurity with the low pixel sensor. The 1DX is a great camera for sports events, but we’ve got to stop holding on to the past.

The Sony A1 is 60 mp and is roughly equivalent to the Canon R5. Depending on what function you’re talking about, one is slightly better than the other. But, the bottom line is that Sony realizes that high megapixel sensors are the wave of the future.

I was stunned to find the release of a camera above my R5 that has a lower resolution sensor than the one I own. Canon must be more intelligent than I am, and only time will tell if the R3 is a best seller or not. Indeed, if you upgrade to the 30 mp R3 from a 20 mp 1DX, you’ll see better results. Just think of the results if it went to 60-80 mp?
